Sharon Stone

Sharon Stone was born in rural Saegertown, PA, on March 10, 1958. She was the second of four children born to factory worker, Joseph, and homemaker, Dorothy, who had been wed as teenagers. In interviews, Stone joked (and her mother corroborated) that she was born an adult, walking and talking by ten months old and with a sophisticated, intense sensibility that made it hard to relate to kids her own age. She was remarkably creative, sewing her own clothes, writing, painting and staging plays in the family garage that included her own scripts and set designs. There was one movie screen in town and the avid film fan saw everything that came through when she was not glued to Golden Age Hollywood

Subsequent films, including Sliver (1993) and The Specialist (1994), did not fare as well with critics or fans. The lull in her career led some to claim that her success had more to do with her simmering sexuality than her acting. But Stone proved the critics wrong in 1995 with Martin Scorsese's Casino. The film won Stone a Golden Globe as well as an Academy Award nomination, and put Stone back in the limelight.

Following the win, she took on a number of dramatic roles including The Quick and the Dead (1995) and Last Dance (1996). She finished the decade with a number of uneven films, including Sphere in 1998 and Gloria in 1999, but received praise for her comedic performance in The Muse that same year.

In 1992, Stone landed the unforgettable role of a bisexual murder suspect in the blockbuster film Basic Instinct. Stone sparked controversy for a particular scene in the film, which required her to cross and uncross her legs in a way which revealed she was not wearing underwear. While Stone initially claimed she was not aware of the level of nudity that would be revealed in the film, she later recanted.

Sharon Stone was born and raised in Meadville, a small town in Pennsylvania, to Dorothy (Lawson), accountant and homemaker, and Joseph William Stone II, a factory worker. Her father was strict. She was the second of four children, and has English, German, Scottish, and Irish ancestry. At the age of 15, she studied in Saegertown High School, Pennsylvania and, at that same age, entered Edinboro State University of Pennsylvania, and graduated with a degree in creative writing and fine arts. She was a very smart girl, became a bookworm, and once was told that a suitable job for her (and her brains) was to become a lawyer. However, her first love was still the black-and-white movies, especially those featuring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. So, the 17-year-old Sharon got herself into the Miss Crawford County and won the beauty contest.
